On historic Baldwin Avenue, a hundred feet or so away from the very best Maui has to offer in terms of art and cuisine, you see what appears to be a typical Makawao home. On one side, a gate that takes you down a private walkway to your own 2 bedroom cottage. You walk into a cozy place with 'all the comforts from home'. A sliding glass door takes you to your own covered lanai overlooking a jungle-filled gulch. Seasonal fruits are available for your pleasure: banana, papaya, passion fruit, avocado, etc.
The location is ideal, because you're central to all that Maui has to show you: halfway up haleakala to the south, 30 minutes from Wailea and Kihei to the west, 15 minutes to Ho'okipa (surfer heaven) , Baldwin Park ('baby beach' ideal for families), and Pa'ia to the north, and 10 minutes from the 'road to Hana' to the east. The History of Kuaihelani... lends itself to the imagination of an era of discovery. Originally held in the Alii land divides of old Hawaii, this 18-acre, Upcountry Maui estate was purchased in the early 1920's by the chief botanist of Dole Pineapple on Oahu. In a search for the perfect botanical environment, Kuaihelani was discovered for its unique climate protected from the afternoon tradewind showers of windward Haleakala, 3,000 feet above sea level, with the perfect amount of annual rainfall. From 1920 to 1947, the estate was primarily used for the study of tubular flowers. Daily high and low temperatures were recorded, as well as any precipitation. Detailed journal entries, discovered by the current owners, recorded every aspect of life at Kuaihelani. Though scientific visits lasted only four weeks at a time, every bulb and seedling placed into the soil was documented and monitored. During World War II, Kuaihelani was commissioned to grow only food, as water was a precious commodity. Throughout it's colorful past, Kuaihelani was a safe place secure in the heavens, where flowers were harvested for their gift of beauty as well as their contribution to scientific study. At its peak, Kuaihelani was a major contributor to the Maui County Fair floral exhibits in the early part of this century. It has been written that during the late 1930's, it took over three days to transport the nearly-200 varieties of flowers that were in bloom throughout the estate down to the County Fairgrounds. This trip 'down country' is only a 30-minute drive today. |

Makawao’s shops sell saddles, leathers, rifles and all the gear you’d expect to find in an Old West town. Within walking distance, you’ll find shops filled with hundreds of items, ranging from local artwork to imports from exotics ports of call. It’s not unusual to find horses hitched up behind the stores while several expensive four wheel drive vehicles are parked in front. |

Aside from our affordability, the best thing about Peace of Maui is our location. We have a secluded country setting and yet are central to everything. We are situated halfway between Paia and Makawao in a place called Haliimaile. Great beaches, windsurfing, shopping, dining and the airport are all less than 15 minutes away. Few spots on the island can claim that. In addition, we have incredible views of Mt. Haleakala and the north shore of Maui. The weather in Haliimaile is perfectly moderated by the trades. It's drier than Haiku, and cooler than Kihei or Lahaina. You'll love it. We are recommended in virtually every major guide book.
